Many of you have already checked out my $71.00 laundry room DIY renovation. One of my favorite parts of my laundry room renovation is the painted linoleumvinyl floor. UPDATE: It was recently pointed out to me on Pinterest (rather rudely) that linoleum is different than vinyl.  I googled information technology and in fact, that is true.  But, Google as well informed me that even floor stores use the terms interchangeably.  In whatever event, technically, my floors are VINYL. My painted VINYL floors are gorgeous and have been held up beautifully for over four years now! No chipping or peeling. I'thousand amazed!

Now, permit'due south review what the flooring looked similar BEFORE I painted it.  Ummm…yuck.

It was such a tragic brick pattern and was vinyl.  Not my cup of tea.  Merely, I did non desire to spend much money on the floor.  I had seen the laundry room makeover by Kelly at A View Along the Fashion and fell in dear with it.  She had painted her vinyl floors and they turned out beautifully, so I gave it a shot.

How to Pigment Vinyl Floors:

Materials needed:

  • Valspar Porch and Floor Latex Satin Enamel Pigment
    • I used dark gray and creamy white colors.  Y'all can accept the paint custom mixed to any colour at Lowe'south.
  • KILZ General Purpose Interior Primer
  • Paint rollers
  • Pigment trays
  • Painter's tape
    • The width of painter's tape that you select will depend on how wide you would like your stripes to exist.
  • Floor cleaning solution
    • I recommend TSP, just if you don't have any on mitt a more mild cleaner should work.

Steps to Painting Vinyl Floors:

1) Select the pattern and colors to utilise- I opted for a striped pattern for painting vinyl floors, much like Kelly used.  Instead of going with deep blackness and stark white, I wanted a softer look, so I used an antique white and charcoal gray.  I purchased 1 quart of each colour in Valspar at Lowe's.  Exist SURE to buy porch and floor paint.  Information technology is durable and is intended for foot traffic.

ii) Clear and make clean the flooring area- I was lucky that our laundry room was big enough to scoot the washer and dryer in and out of position to paint the flooring underneath information technology.  But, if you are non so lucky, you lot volition have to move those bad boys somewhere else for a few days.  After you articulate the floor, you need to clean the floor.  Brand sure it is clear of dust and clay.  Some people recommend using TSP (a heavy duty cleaner), just I did not have any on hand, so I used my normal floor cleaner (I use Mrs. Meyer's All Purpose Cleaner).

three) Prime the floor- I used regular old KILZ General Purpose Interior Primer  to prime number the unabridged flooring.  I poured the primer directly on the floor and used a small paint roller to spread it.  I only used one coat of primer and that worked just fine.  I did information technology effectually 9pm i night and allow it dry overnight.

4) Painting the vinyl floor– This pace has several "sub-steps":

  • Afterward letting the primer dry overnight, I painted the unabridged floor with the antique white colour, which I considered my "base" color, twice.  That'due south right, two coats.  Fortunately, this pigment dries pretty apace, but I did employ a large box fan to speed the process along.  I was able to get these two coats done in one day.  So, I let the base colour dry overnight.  I am not going to lie, this was kind of a messy project.  Be prepared to scrub your feet :)

  • The following nighttime, I taped off my stripes using regular bluish painter's tape.  I used the existing brick pattern to determine the width of my stripes, which eliminated the need to measure first.  Notation that my flooring had some definite texture to it, so I knew bleeding would happen, but I just rolled with it.  I knew information technology would be an piece of cake fix after.  However, if you absolutely want to avoid bleeding, follow this stride: After taping your floors, add i more coat of your base color over the entire floor–paint OVER the tape. That will seal the well-baked lines and prevent whatever bleeding.  Trust me, it works on textured surfaces.

painting stripes on floor

  • Side by side, I painted the stripes with my secondary colour–dark grey.  I as well painted two coats with the charcoal grey color.  I allow the starting time coat dry overnight (more often than not because information technology was late) and completed the 2nd glaze the adjacent dark.

  • Once your stripes are dry out, remove the tape.  If you have some bleeding, do not panic.  But take hold of an angled paint brush and use it to "cut in" forth the stripes to make them dainty and well-baked.  Information technology sounds tedious, but this step took me less than 15 minutes.

That's it!  Now yous know how to paint vinyl floors. Information technology sounds similar a lot of steps (and it is), but each step takes no more than than 10 to twenty minutes.  I plant painting my flooring moved FAR more quickly than painting walls.  I think all of the steps combined took me less than 2 hours (excluding drying time).  In other words, it was easy to knock out in the evenings after work without being as well exhausted the next day.

The end consequence is One thousand.O.R.G.East.O.U.S! Painting our vinyl floors is the Nigh WORTHWHILE two HOURS OF MY DIY LIFE! I admittedly love, love, beloved this floor. UPDATE: It has been painted for over iv years now and it is holding up perfectly.  Nosotros have not "babied" it at all.  We are as rough on it equally nosotros have always been–laundry baskets get scooted across information technology, etc. and there is no damage or scratching whatsoever from daily use. Nosotros did have to remove and replace the water heater at one betoken and the floor did get scraped in one area when the plumber dragged the one-time h2o heater out, but that was understandable and piece of cake to affect up.
